Picking Up Your Medication
Once an individual receives their test results, which can take several days or more, if they are HIV-negative, their prescriber will give them a PrEP prescription.
PrEP prescriptions can be filled at any pharmacy. Not all pharmacies keep PrEP in stock, though, so it’s a good idea to call in advance to see if PrEP is available. If not, they may need to order the medication in.
Once someone begins PrEP, they will be required to follow-up with their prescriber after one month, and then every three months thereafter. These follow-up visits are intended to make sure that patients remain HIV negative, that they are tested and treated for STIs, that any unintended PrEP impacts or side effects are monitored, and that PrEP remains a good HIV prevention option for the person. Patients will likely be expected to meet these follow-up requirements in order to receive a prescription for a PrEP refill. More information about these follow-up requirements can be found here.
If you have any issues accessing PrEP at a local pharmacy, you can try printing the document below and bringing it to your pharmacist.
